HELEN YEATES AWARD 2025

Helen Yeates Award

In 2017, in recognition of her service to Media Education in Queensland and Australia, ATOM QLD introduced the Helen Yeates Award for Excellence in Media Education.

Helen has had more impact on the introduction and development of Media Education in Queensland than any other individual, through her activities as:

  • One of the founders of Australian Teachers of Media in Queensland, and an early ATOM Qld President during the organisation’s formative years

  • Chair of National Media Education Conferences that promoted the expansion of Media Education in Australia.

  • Advocacy for the development of Media Education curriculum in Queensland

  • Development of Media Curriculum as a teaching area at QUT

  • An innovative contributor in the field of creative industries theory and practice

  • Supporting the Brisbane International Film Festival and other major film culture events

  • An inspirational teacher and mentor of undergraduate and post graduate students in film and television at QUT.

Each year, ATOM QLD opens nominations for exceptional media students and staff members who excel in three criteria: growth in the curriculum area, social/cultural impact, and innovation and creativity.

“This workshop will a session where participants will be given the materials for a unit they can use directly with classes as an introduction to game development for Years 5 to 10 Media Arts students (the unit also covers a number of content descriptors from ACARA Digital Technologies).

During the workshop, participants who bring a computer will follow-along and create a platform game (similar to Super Mario Bros) of their own (this game will be what participants would then show their students how to make) using the open-source Godot Engine.

This workshop will be aimed at teachers with zero experience in making games. There will be some coding concepts discussed, but the key focus will be on how to run/roll out the unit and how to rapidly follow the steps to get a basic platformer engine up and running, which will then allow for creative level-designs by students through the bulk of the unit.”
